Grain Banks: A grain bank provides a way for the village to decrease or eliminate dependence on private money lenders. During harvest time, each family in the village contributes a small amount of grain to a community grain bank. This physical surplus of grain is safely stored until it is needed. Families are able to take loans of grain and then repay it when they are able, with a minimal rate of interest determined by the community. A village committee manages the loans, resulting in greater autonomy for the village.
